How to Introduce Yourself in Japanese (With Examples!)

Whether you're meeting a new friend, classmate, or coworker in Japan, knowing how to introduce yourself is essential. Let’s learn the basics!

1. Saying “Hello” Politely

Start with a simple greeting:

こんにちは！
Konnichiwa!
→ Hello / Good afternoon

2. Stating Your Name

わたしはアリスです。
Watashi wa Arisu desu.
→ I am Alice.

Or casually:

アリスです。
Arisu desu.
→ I'm Alice.

3. Saying Where You're From

アメリカから来ました。
Amerika kara kimashita.
→ I came from the U.S.

Swap “アメリカ” for your own country!

4. Mentioning Your Job or Role

せんせいです。
Sensei desu.
→ I’m a teacher.

がくせいです。
Gakusei desu.
